All is well up at Chips. He has been procrastinating at his favorite chore, brush cutting and weed whacking the stone walls and boulders that dot his families land.

He does it so well and thorough that I’m concerned for the day when he tells me its my turn.

I have known Chip for a solid 15 years and all the while it has been a satisfying relationship. He does what he likes to do, I like to do what I feel like doing, and he lets me trespass with impunity. Perfect relationship.

His family has been on this land on and off for 100 plus years, there are photographs of trees that were saplings that now tower 80 feet. He remembers waking up to cows at the window, who were trying to make their great escape.

Chip still works, an engineer by trade, trying to solve problems for the Mil-XXXX. With his years and knowledge he already knows the answer … but hey it’s gov’t work, and well …

I love the first part of fall – September and most of October, as there is always a project. I also like that you’re racing time. Days are about to get real short, the sun fights to shine but it loses, the fruit is on the trees and the animals come to eat. Even the coyote comes for an apple or 2. (Charlie used to love to steal apples from Chips house)

This year Sam tried his hand at mowing one of the fields. Sam was born on a big farm and spent his very early childhood around chickens, geese, horses, sheep, many dogs and a goat named Charlie. Sam did not really ever get to play with tractors much or pick up a haybale or even get any firewood enjoyment. (firewood enjoyment is another story). The farm had been sold. His constitution would be perfect for the world of a “farm”.

Sam and Chip have a few traits in common. High character, an opinion on Sleepy Joe. Quiet independence. And their own compass.

I’ll be heading south soon, following the birds. When I get back for Thanksgiving, Chip should have the the walls finished and he and I will get to split some wood.

Yes, it’s been a nice fall.
